Match Report: Kansas City Current Extends Home Unbeaten Streak in 3-0 Triumph over Houston Dash

KANSAS CITY (May 15, 2026) — The Kansas City Current (5-4-0, 15 pts., 6th place) extended a pair of streaks on Friday night at CPKC Stadium, as the Current rode a brace from forward Temwa Chawinga and a pair of assists from forward Michelle Cooper to a 3-0 victory over the Houston Dash (3-5-1, 10 pts., 10th place). A dangerous cross from Cooper forced an own goal in the 15th minute to open the scoring, and Cooper turned provider with two assists to Chawinga in the 17th and 68th minute to seal the victory. Goalkeeper Lorena made multiple key saves to lead another lockdown defensive effort by the Current’s back line, keeping Houston off the scoreboard to earn the team’s second consecutive shutout.

The win extended the Current’s regular season unbeaten streak at CPKC Stadium to 21 matches, tying the second-longest streak in NWSL history. The club, which improves to 4-0-0 at home this season, has won its last eight regular season home matches dating back to 2025.

Chawinga and forward/midfielder Ally Sentnor both made their 50th career regular season start on Friday night while defender Elizabeth Ball moved into a tie for second in club history with her 79th career regular season start. Cooper recorded the first multi-assist game of her professional career in the victory.

"On the inside of the locker room, the players are hungry. They've been that way all year long and now we're getting some results," said head coach Chris Armas. "It's getting going and we all feel like there's real momentum. And now, it's really important to try and build on that. Our fans showed up once again. In this business of sports and pro sports, when the fans get behind players this way, something special happens every single time. Players feed off them and I think they feed off the players, and it makes for such a great environment...It's a good win for our team. We have a lot of work to do, but another shutout is good for the group."

Kansas City got off the blocks quickly in front of another sellout crowd. A cascade of early pressure paid off as a threatening cross from Cooper forced an own goal in the 15th minute. Defender Laney Rouse began the move near midfield, sending a ball up the right wing for Cooper. She raced towards goal, using a series of feints that allowed for just enough separation to lift a cross towards the back post from just outside the penalty area. Cooper’s cross glanced off the outstretched arms of Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell before settling in the lower left corner of the goal.

The Current struck again two minutes and 29 seconds later. Midfielder Croix Bethune was the catalyst for the scoring move, brilliantly turning past a Dash defender near midfield before breaking into space to curl a pass over Houston's defense to Cooper at the back post from nearly 40 yards out. Campbell came out to collect Cooper’s goal-bound touch, but Cooper stayed with the play to corral the loose ball and clip the ball over Campbell for a wide-open Chawinga on the top of the six-yard box. Chawinga made no mistake, rolling a one-time strike into the lower right corner of the goal to double the Current’s advantage.

Kansas City’s defense, which held Houston without a shot on target in the opening stanza, carried its 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Dash threatened as the second half began, but Lorena made a comfortable diving stop in the 53rd minute on a long-range effort from Houston midfielder Linda Ullmark. Six minutes later, the Kansas City netminder made a full extension dive to push an effort from Dash midfielder Kat Rader over the crossbar.

Kansas City’s third goal of the match came in transition in the 68th minute, as the Current’s front line broke towards goal after forward Haley Hopkins won a loose ball near midfield. Presented with a three-on-two opportunity with runners on either side, Hopkins played a ball for Cooper down the right wing. From just outside the box, Cooper played a one-time diagonal ball across the face of goal that fell perfectly for Chawinga at the back post. She smashed the ball past Campbell to complete her brace and give the Current a 3-0 advantage.

Cooper secured the first multi-assist game of her NWSL regular season career while Chawinga upped her regular season goal tally to five. Despite not making her debut until April 4, Chawinga vaulted to second on the 2026 NWSL Golden Boot leaderboard following Friday’s performance. Cooper has now assisted seven Chawinga goals since the start of the 2024 campaign.

Additionally, Chawinga has now scored 40 goals in her NWSL regular season career. She has scored 25 goals in 27 regular season matches at CPKC Stadium, the third most by any NWSL player at a single venue in league history. Chawinga trails only Christine Sinclair (41 at Providence Park) and Marta (26 at Inter&Co Stadium) in league laurels.

The insurance goal provided more than enough cushion for the Current to see out the result, capping the debut of the club’s new Storm Kit with a 3-0 victory. The win extended the Current’s NWSL regular season home unbeaten streak to 21 matches, tied for the second-longest streak in league history. Kansas City only trails Seattle (22 straight from 2014-15) and is level with North Carolina (21 straight in 2023-24) in the record books. The Current has outscored its opponents a combined 48-10 over the duration of the club’s ongoing home unbeaten streak. Friday’s match also marked the club’s 30th NWSL regular season match played at CPKC Stadium.

The Current has a quick turnaround before its next contest, as the club takes a midweek trip to the West Coast for a matchup with Angel City FC on Wednesday, May 20.
