Match Recap: Kansas City Current Earn 2-0 Shutout Victory Over Utah Royals FC

SANDY, Utah (Oct. 17, 2026) — The Kansas City Current (14-9-5, 47 pts., 4th place) earned a crucial 2-0 road victory over Utah Royals FC (14-10-4, 46 pts., 5th place) Saturday evening in Sandy, Utah. Forward Haley Hopkins headed the Current ahead in the 21st minute, rising to meet a corner kick from midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo at the back post to give Kansas City a 1-0 lead. In second-half stoppage time, Hopkins sealed the victory by capping a Current counterattack with a composed finish. Kansas City saw the match out from there to earn a 2-0 victory.

Saturday’s victory vaulted the Current to fourth place on the NWSL table with two regular season matches remaining. Hopkins’ brace — her third of the season — gave the Current an even 50 goals as a team for the third consecutive season. It marked the Current’s fifth shutout victory and second road shutout of the 2026 campaign. Kansas City also extended its ongoing winning streak to three consecutive matches.

“Nothing has come easy, there’s been a lot of adversity this year and a lot of challenges that our team has overcome which has made us stronger,” said head coach Chris Armas. “Our team met the demands against a good team on the road tonight in a really important match. To see the way the team has stuck together, the belief in what we’re doing, I’m really proud of this team and we are hungry to do more.”

Kansas City withstood some pressure from the hosts throughout the early stages of the contest but began to find its footing after the opening 10 minutes of the match. In the 12th minute, Hopkins displayed great hold-up play in the 18-yard box after receiving a clipped cross from DiBernardo, dropping the ball back for the oncoming run of forward/midfielder Debinha. However, Utah goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn raced off her line to snare the loose ball before Debinha could meet it.

In the 16th minute, forward Temwa Chawinga nearly scored a spectacular goal from long range as the Current launched a counterattack. Debinha played Chawinga through on goal from the Current’s own half of the pitch and, spotting McGlynn off her line, Chawinga unleashed a curled effort from over 30 yards from goal that barely missed the net.

The Current broke through five minutes later with a well-worked set piece. The ball came in from DiBernardo on the left wing from a corner kick, and she curled the ball perfectly to the back post for Hopkins. Hopkins outjumped multiple Utah defenders at the back post, then fizzed a header into the top left corner of the net to put Kansas City ahead.

The goal marked Hopkins’ career-high 10th of the season, joining Chawinga as the lone Current players with double-digit goals this season. DiBernardo, meanwhile, picked up her 33rd career NWSL regular season assist — the second-highest tally in league history.

Kansas City nearly added a second in first-half stoppage time with yet another Chawinga-led counterattack. Following a Utah corner kick, Debinha broke forward and played an inch-perfect through ball for Chawinga to chase. Chawinga latched onto the effort and rounded McGlynn but fired her effort off the crossbar. Kansas City took its 1-0 lead into the locker room as the halftime whistle sounded.

The Current withstood pressure from the hosts as the second half progressed. Goalkeeper Lorena made an excellent diving save at the near post in the 71st minute, sprawling to punch away an effort from Jameese Joseph at the near post.

However, Kansas City found multiple opportunities in transition as the second half wore on and found the insurance goal in second-half stoppage time. Midfielder Bayley Feist started the move in the defensive third, intercepting an errant touch and curling a ball ahead for Chawinga near midfield.

Chawinga turned on her defender and raced towards goal, breaking past her defender and going ahead into the 18-yard box. With Hopkins making a forward run down the left wing, Chawinga squared a ball across goal that Hopkins rolled past a sprawling McGlynn with a one-time finish. The goal sealed a 2-0 victory for Kansas City.

Hopkins extended her goal tally to 11 with her third multi-goal performance of the season. She has now scored six goals across her last three games. The assist marked Chawinga’s fourth of the season and 13th of her Current career. She now trails defender Izzy Rodriguez (14) for the club record.

The goal also marked the Current’s 50th of the NWSL regular season, becoming the second team to reach the milestone. Kansas City has scored at least 50 goals in two seasons, with the club also hitting the milestone in 2024. Midfielder Croix Bethune made her first appearance since Sept. 4 as a second-half substitute, playing the final 35 minutes of the contest.

Kansas City also notched its sixth consecutive victory over Utah following Saturday’s result. The Current, who has also defeated Bay FC in all six meetings, joined North Carolina (vs. Louisville and Washington) as the only teams in NWSL history to win their first six regular season matches against two different opponents.
