Match Preview: Kansas City Current Opens August Slate With Rematch Against Angel City FC

KANSAS CITY (July 31, 2026) – Following an emphatic win on Wednesday night, the Kansas City Current (9-7-1, 28 pts. 6th place) is back home at CPKC Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 1, for a rematch with Angel City FC (7-7-1, 22 pts., 8th place). Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. CT and limited tickets are available for purchase HERE.

The match will broadcast nationally on ION with JP Dellacamera and Jill Loyden on the call as well as on the World Feed with Jonathan Matthes and Merritt Mathias. Fans in Kansas City can catch a simulcast of the match on The Spot – Kansas City 38, and Dave Borchardt and Sarah Gonzalez will call the action on 90.9 The Bridge. The game will also be available on the KC Current App in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

The Current will celebrate Educator Appreciation Night on Saturday ahead of back-to-school. Education professionals from across the region are invited for a special night in their honor, featuring themed activations celebrating the education heroes making a difference in our community.

TEN THINGS TO KNOW

1. Kansas City and Angel City enter Saturday’s match tied in the all-time regular season series at 4-4-1. The Current is 4-1-0 in the last five meetings and has outscored Angel City 10-4 in that span.

2. Kansas City is on an active home unbeaten run of 25 consecutive regular season matches at CPKC Stadium (21-0-4), extending its NWSL record.

3. The Current scored three goals in the opening 20 minutes of play during Wednesday’s 5-1 rout of Louisville. Kansas City has outscored opponents 15-6 in the first 20 minutes of regular season home games at CPKC Stadium, the most goals scored and the fewest goals conceded at home by any NWSL team since 2024.

4. Forward Haley Hopkins and midfielder Debinha both bagged a brace on Wednesday for the first and fifth time in their respective careers. It was just the second time in club history two players recorded a brace in the same regular season match.

5. The win over Louisville marked midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo’s 100th career regular season victory. She joins elite company in Debinha, Lauren Barnes and Jess Fishlock as the only players in league history who have hit that milestone. 

6. Rookie forward Amelia White scored her first career NWSL goal on Wednesday, while midfielder Bayley Feist dished out her first assist as a member of the KC Current. Rookie defender Kolo Suliafu made her league debut.

7. Debinha co-owns the NWSL record with Lynn Biyendolo for most goals scored across all league competitions with 82. Her next regular season assist will make her the first player in NWSL history to reach 20 goals/10 assists for two different clubs.

8. Midfielder Croix Bethune is tied for first in the NWSL with seven regular season assists so far this year, a new KC Current club single-season record. She is one away from reaching 20 career regular season assists and is on pace to be the second-fastest player to do so.

9. Defender Elizabeth Ball is set to make her 100th regular season appearance for Kansas City this weekend, which will make her the third player to hit that milestone in a Current kit. Ball recently signed a contract extension through 2027 with an option for 2028. 

10. Chawinga is currently with the Malawi Women’s National Team at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), taking place in Morocco from July 26 to Aug. 16. She had a brace in the Scorchers’ 3-2 group stage win over 10-time WAFCON champion Nigeria on July 28.

KC CURRENT SIGNS DEFENDER ITALA GEMELLI

The Kansas City Current has signed defender Itala Gemelli to a short-term contract as a roster relief player. Gemelli has most recently been on the KC Current II roster where she is team captain. She helped Current II win the 2026 WPSL Championship and was named to both the WPSL All-Central Region Team and the WPSL All-National Selection Team.

• Current Landing Pre-Match Food + Beverage is now open, located just north of the KC Current Team Store, giving fans another food and beverage option before entering CPKC Stadium.

During each KC Current 50/50 Raffle drawing period, half of the jackpot goes to one lucky winner while the other half goes back into the Kansas City community.
