Temwa Chawinga signed with the Kansas City Current ahead of the 2024 season and inked a three-year contract extension on Jan. 29, 2025, to keep her with the club through the 2027 season. She has taken the NWSL by storm, delivering back-to-back dominant campaigns and rewriting the record books.
Chawinga won the Golden Boot in 2024 and 2025 as the league’s top regular season goal scorer with 20 and 15 goals, respectively, becoming the second player in NWSL history to win the award multiple times. She also claimed the NWSL MVP in 2024 and 2025 as the first player in league laurels to win the award in consecutive years. Chawinga was the first player in KC Current club history to win either accolade. Her five career NWSL Player of the Month awards is a league record, and her 10 NWSL Best XI of the Month selections rank second. She was also named to the NWSL Best XI First Team in 2024 and 2025.
The lethal forward delivered the most dominant debut campaign in NWSL history. In 2024, Chawinga became the first player in league history to score 20 goals in a season, record a goal in eight consecutive regular season matches and score a goal against all 13 NWSL teams. She followed that up in 2025 by becoming the fastest player to score 25 regular season goals (in 34 games), the fastest player to score 30 regular season goals (in 40 games), the first player in NWSL history to score in seven consecutive regular season road matches and the first to score in each of her first four regular season games against two different opponents. She was critical in the Current winning the 2025 NWSL Shield and setting numerous regular season NWSL records including points (65), wins (21), consecutive wins (9), multi-goal games (18) and multi-goal wins (15), among others.
Prior to Kansas City, Chawinga played for Wuhan Jianghan University F.C. in the Chinese Super League from 2020-23 where she totaled 84 appearances and 84 goals. She scored 51 goals in the 2023 calendar year alone, finishing as the world’s top scorer across all competitions. From 2018-20, Chawinga starred in Sweden for Kvarnsvedens IK, netting 55 goals in 57 appearances.
Internationally, Chawinga debuted for Malawi at age 18. She scored her first international goal against Zambia in 2016 and captained the Malawian National Team at the 2023 COSAFA Cup where she won both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball for scoring nine goals. She has twice been nominated for CAF Women’s Player of the Year. Chawinga earned her first career Ballon d’Or nomination in 2025 and finished No. 17 in the final rankings.
