The Kansas City Current signed goalkeeper Lorena da Silva Leite, simply known as Lorena, in December 2024 to a three-year contract through 2027 with an option for 2028. Lorena rewrote the record books during her first NWSL season and was named the 2025 NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year – the first player in club history to win the award – and earned a spot on the 2025 NWSL Best XI First Team. She was twice named to the NWSL Best XI of the Month, too.
Anchored by Lorena, the Current set NWSL records for clean sheets (16), consecutive shutouts minutes (869), consecutive shutouts (9), shutouts at home (8) and fewest goals conceded (13) in 2025 en route to winning the NWSL Shield. Individually, Lorena broke the league record with 690 consecutive shutout minutes and 14 regular season clean sheets. She tied the league mark for fastest keeper to reach 10 shutouts, doing so in just 17 matches. Lorena’s 24 regular season starts set a club record, as did her 2,160 regular season minutes. Her 14 clean sheets in just one season set a new franchise record for career shutouts.
Lorena joined the Current from Brazilian club Grêmio. She made her professional debut with Sport Recife in March 2017 before joining Grêmio, the club she represented in her youth career, in 2019. Lorena took over the starting goalkeeper spot in 2021, leading the club to the Gaucho Championship (Brazilian League) titles in 2022 and 2024.
Internationally, Lorena has been a mainstay on the Brazilian National Team since making her senior team debut in November 2021. After missing the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup due to injury, she returned to play every minute of Brazil's campaign at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, recording three clean sheets in six matches to lead Brazil to the silver medal. She guided Brazil to its fifth straight Copa América title in August 2025, clinching the championship with her game-winning save in the penalty kick shootout vs. Colombia.
