Kansas City became the first team this season to secure its spot in the 2025 NWSL Playoffs, presented by Google Pixel, on Aug. 30. The club equaled the league record for fastest team to earn a playoff berth, doing so with eight regular season games remaining.
The Current begins their playoff campaign as the No. 1 seed after clinching the NWSL Shield, which is awarded to the team with the best record during the regular season, on Sept. 20 for the first time in franchise history. Kansas City became the fastest club in NWSL history to win the Shield, having done so with five regular season matches left.
This will be the KC Current’s third playoff appearance in club history, and in back-to-back seasons with head coach Vlatko Andonovski at the helm. The team locked in the fourth seed in the 2024 NWSL Playoffs and hosted No. 5 North Carolina in the first home playoff match in both Current and CPKC Stadium history on Nov. 9, 2024, resulting in a 1-0 win over the Courage. Kansas City’s 2024 season ended in the semifinals vs. the top-ranked Orlando Pride.
The club’s first postseason berth was in 2022 as the fifth seed with its inaugural playoff victory coming on Oct. 16, 2022, after a 2-1 win over No. 4 Houston Dash in the quarterfinals. The Current took down top-seed OL Reign (now known as Seattle Reign FC) in the semifinal to book a spot in the championship match where they ultimately concluded their season with a 2-0 loss to No. 2 Portland Thorns.
Kansas City, which has remained at the top of the NWSL standings since Week 6, concluded arguably the most decorated regular season in league history with 65 points and a 21-3-2 ledger. The club set new NWSL records for points (65), wins (21), clean sheets (16), consecutive wins (9), consecutive shutouts (9) and consecutive shutout minutes (869), among others. Additionally, the Current became just the sixth team in league history to go unbeaten at home in a regular season.
