Midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta Re-signs with Kansas City Current

KANSAS CITY (Dec. 15, 2021) — The Kansas City Current signed midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta to a new contract, keeping the veteran midfielder with the club through the 2024 season.

Drafted by Sky Blue (now Gotham FC) in 2015, LaBonta made six appearances in her rookie season. Seeing her potential, then General Manager Huw Williams signed her to play for FC Kansas City, where she quickly became a regular in the lineup.

She tallied 2,420 minutes of action in two years with FCKC, then another 2,682 minutes with the Utah Royals. In 2020, she was one of only two players to appear in every game of the Challenge Cup and Fall Series for Utah.

LaBonta was one of 22 players assigned to Kansas City’s roster last January, and one of seven former FC Kansas City players returning to play in KC. In the team’s inaugural season, she ranked third with 19 appearances and 17 starts.

The veteran’s vision and tenacity have enabled LaBonta to be one of the league’s most dynamic and reliable midfielders. She had 28 tackles and won 95 duels for Kansas City in the midfield this season.

“I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to continue to build this organization into the true powerhouse it can be,” said LaBonta. “Re-signing with this club means that fans will be hearing ‘KC Baby’ from me for at least three more years.”

LaBonta has established herself as a leader on the field and off. She is credited by many for creating the iconic chant that has become an instant tradition for Kansas City Current fans and is often found talking with fans and signing autographs following a match.

Building on an exciting Inaugural Season, which included the announcement of a new $15 million training facility (opening in 2022) and $70 million stadium (opening 2024), the Kansas City Current are actively preparing for the 2022 NWSL season. Next up is the NWSL Draft on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. CT.
