Match Report: Kansas City Current Sustains 4-0 Defeat Against Washington Spirit

WASHINGTON (April 24, 2026) — The Kansas City Current (2-4-0, 6 pts., 11th place) resumed National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) action with a 4-0 road defeat at the hands of the Washington Spirit (2-1-3, 9 pts., 5th place) on Friday night in Washington, D.C.

Forward Temwa Chawinga made her 50th NWSL regular season appearance for the Current with a start. Defender Izzy Rodriguez made her 58th career regular season start, moving her to fourth all-time in club history. Rodriguez also notched her 32nd consecutive appearance for the Current, the third-longest streak in franchise history.

After a cagey opening few minutes, the Current nearly went ahead after pressure in the attacking third forced a turnover. In the 14th minute, the turnover led to a breakaway opportunity for midfielder Croix Bethune, who struck a low, curled effort that was denied by Washington goalkeeper Sandy MacIver.

The Spirit went ahead just over 10 minutes later through midfielder Leicy Santos, who steered home an angled ball across the Current penalty area from forward Trinity Rodman.

Kansas City nearly equalized in the 41st minute, as midfielder Debinha sent a long ball forward for Chawinga in the attacking third. After weaving through the Spirit defense en-route to goal, Chawinga took a heavy touch forward that ultimately met the foot of Debinha in the center of the penalty area. Debinha fired an effort on goal, but a sprawling MacIver kept the ball out to preserve Washington’s lead.

Just before halftime, Rodman added Washington’s second goal with a close-range finish. The hosts ultimately added two more goals in the second half, with Santos securing her brace in the 56th minute and forward Claudia Martínez notching a goal in the 75th minute. Friday’s loss snapped the Current’s three-match unbeaten streak against the Spirit.
