LOS ANGELES (May 20, 2026) — The Kansas City Current (5-5-0, 15 pts., 6th place) fell 2-1 against Angel City FC (4-4-1, 13 pts., 7th place) Wednesday night at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. Angel City opened the scoring with a goal in the ninth minute, but forward Ally Sentnor equalized seconds before halftime on an assist from defender Izzy Rodriguez. Both sides traded scoring opportunities in the second half, but the hosts found the match-winning goal in the 71st minute and ultimately held on to secure victory.
“I would say that the team put ourselves in a good spot, and I'm proud of the way we came back from going down a goal,” said head coach Chris Armas. “The goal hurts that we conceded but our team fought until the very end. We’ll look hard at it. We learn and these games that are tight, we have to find a way to sway the margins. Now we get back home and get ready for a quick turnaround on Sunday."
Wednesday’s contest saw the Current utilize the same starting lineup for the third consecutive match. However, it was the hosts who took a foothold early in the contest with a goal in the ninth minute from defender Gisele Thompson.
The Current steadily pushed for an equalizer, ultimately reclaiming momentum in the late stages of the opening stanza. Midfielder Croix Bethune had the team's first shot on target in the 28th minute, curling an effort from the top of the penalty area that Angel City goalkeeper Anglina Anderson snared. From nearly an identical spot in the 42nd minute, Bethune sent another effort inches wide of goal.
Minutes later — and seconds before halftime — Kansas City found an equalizer with a well-worked team goal. Midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta began the move in the attacking third, clipping a ball forward that Sentnor steered behind her with a one-time pass for Bethune. Bethune took a touch towards goal before spotting a wide-open Rodriguez on the left, who took a touch inside the penalty area before picking out Sentnor in the center. Sentnor took a touch then fired an effort on goal that redirected off a defender, sending a sprawling Anderson the wrong way and the ball into the back of the net.
The goal marked Sentnor’s second of the season and sixth of her regular season career. It was also the second assist in league play for Rodriguez, who extended her own franchise assist record to 13. Rodriguez has now assisted 12 different teammates since her debut in 2022, tied for the most in NWSL history. The match remained level at 1-1 as the halftime whistle sounded.
Kansas City had two opportunities to take the lead in the early stages of the second half. In the 54th minute, Bethune latched onto the end of a cross from LaBonta at the top of the six-yard box. Stretching to reach the cross, Bethune steered the ball on net, but Anderson made a full-extension kick save to keep the ball out. Minutes later, the Current were awarded a penalty kick after Sentnor beat her mark on a long ball forward and drew a foul in the penalty area. LaBonta stepped up to take the spot kick, but Anderson denied the effort.
Angel City found the game-winning goal in the 71st minute courtesy of a long-range strike from midfielder Kennedy Fuller. Thompson played the ball towards Fuller who fired a half-volleyed strike into the left side of the goal.
Kansas City pushed for a late equalizer as the second half wore on but could not level the contest as the hosts earned a 2-1 victory. Wednesday’s match snapped the Current’s four-match winning streak against Angel City FC.
Defender Elizabeth Ball earned her 80th regular season start for the Current on Wednesday night, tied for the second-highest total in club history. She also vaulted into second place in club history in minutes played with 7,132. Ball and Rodriguez both made their 95th career regular season appearance for the Current in the contest, tied for the second-highest total in club history. Goalkeeper Lorena moved into third place for consecutive regular season minutes played, sitting at a streak of 1,530 minutes.
