Match Report: Kansas City Current Caps Unbeaten Home Campaign With 2-1 Win Over San Diego Wave

KANSAS CITY (Nov. 2, 2025) — The Kansas City Current (21-3-2, 65 pts., 1st place) closed out the 2025 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) regular season in fittingly historic style Sunday afternoon at CPKC Stadium with a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Wave (10-9-7, 37 pts., 5th place). After the Wave opened the scoring in the first half, midfielder Debinha curled in a brilliant free kick in the 54th minute to level the match before forward Nichelle Prince rattled the game-winning goal off the crossbar and into the back of the net in the 75th minute to complete the comeback.

With the win, Kansas City is now just the sixth team in NWSL history to go unbeaten at home in a regular season.

The Current recorded their 21st victory of the year to extend their own NWSL record, also increasing their league standard for most points in a regular season to 65. Kansas City’s multi-goal performance was the team’s 18th of the regular season, setting a new NWSL single season record for most multi-goal matches. The Current also finished the regular season allowing only 13 goals, the fewest goals conceded by an NWSL team in a single season regardless of length.

"I think it was the mindset of going into the second half that changed the most... We're not going to give this game up no matter what,” said head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “I know it doesn't mean anything for us for the standings or for the playoffs, but it's important we go into playoffs with the right rhythm, and that's what we wanted to do. We wanted to get a good rhythm in the second half to carry on into the playoffs."

The visitors opened the scoring in the eighth minute through midfielder Dudinha, who drilled a low shot from inside the penalty area underneath Current goalkeeper Lorena and into the center of the net. Defender Hailie Mace nearly provided an instant leveler three minutes later, but her shot from the top of the box fizzed just over the crossbar. Midfielder Ally Sentnor struck an effort just wide of the post in the 35th minute and, in first half stoppage time, Sentnor set up defender Izzy Rodriguez inside the penalty area but her shot missed the net. Kansas City was held without a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes as San Diego took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Current found the equalizer in the 54th minute after Sentnor won a foul at the top of San Diego’s 18-yard box. Debinha stepped up to take the free kick about 20 yards from goal and made no mistake with a perfect strike. The Brazilian curled the ball over a six-player San Diego wall and into the left corner of the net. The goal marked Debinha’s eighth of the 2025 campaign and her 79th career goal across all NWSL competitions, the latter which is tied for second all-time in league history. She has now scored twice from a direct free kick this season.

The goal also signaled Debinha’s 20th regular season goal for the Current, becoming the 32nd player in NWSL history to reach 20 with the same club. She has now scored 55 career NWSL regular season goals, moving her into sole possession of sixth all-time in NWSL history.

Buoyed by Debinha’s goal, Kansas City continued to build momentum and began to push for the match-winner. In the 65th minute, goalkeeper Lorena made a crucial save to deny a one-on-one opportunity with Dudinha. The midfielder burst through the Current’s defense and had a clean look at goal, but Lorena reacted well to get two hands behind the shot and push the ball away.

Ten minutes later, Kansas City found its go-ahead goal to secure the win. Debinha kickstarted the move in the attacking third, evading a San Diego defender and slipping a through ball for forward Haley Hopkins. Hopkins met the ball in stride and played a one-time ball across the penalty area for Prince at the back post. Prince connected with Hopkins’ cross and fired a shot past a sprawling Sheridan, off the inside of the crossbar and into the center of the goal. The goal marked Prince’s first of the regular season and the 15th of her regular season career.

Kansas City protected its one-goal lead for the remainder of the match with a sound team defense limiting San Diego scoring opportunities in the late stages. The Current ultimately emerged with a 2-1 victory, improving the team’s home record to an unblemished 11-0-2 for the 2025 regular season.

A pair of Current players etched themselves in the club record book during Sunday’s regular season finale. In the 75th minute, Lorena snapped forward Temwa Chawinga’s 2024 franchise record for most regular season minutes played as the Brazilian netminder has logged 2,160 minutes between the sticks. I. Rodriguez became the first player in club history to appear in all 26 regular season games, eclipsing Chawinga’s record of 25 matches set last season.

The Current also honored the incredible career of forward Kristen Hamilton following Sunday’s match. Hamilton, who has been with Kansas City since its inaugural season in 2021 and has logged over 5,000 regular season minutes with the club, announced her retirement from professional soccer earlier this season. She is one of four players in NWSL history who have been on four Shield-winning teams, and she ranks second all-time with eight total NWSL trophies.

After selling out every regular season home match at CPKC Stadium in 2024 – becoming the first team in NWSL history to do so – the Current replicated the feat this season. Kansas City has now sold out 26 consecutive regular season home matches at CPKC Stadium, the first stadium in the world purpose-built for a women’s professional sports team.

The Current will now turn their attention to the 2025 NWSL Playoffs, presented by Google Pixel. After winning the NWSL Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular season record, Kansas City enters the postseason with the No. 1 overall seed. The Current’s first-round opponent, date kickoff time and broadcast information will be finalized after the conclusion of Decision Day, but Kansas City’s quarterfinal match will be played at CPKC Stadium.
