Match Recap: Kansas City Current Plays to 1-1 Draw Against Angel City FC

KANSAS CITY (Aug. 1, 2026) — The Kansas City Current (9-7-2, 29 pts., 4th place) closed out a stretch of three matches in a seven-day span with a 1-1 draw against Angel City FC (7-7-2, 23 pts., 8th place) Saturday evening at CPKC Stadium. Both goals came in the first half and, after Angel City went ahead in the 14th minute, forward Haley Hopkins leveled the match 12 minutes later with a volley off an assist from defender Izzy Rodriguez. Despite several quality scoring opportunities generated by the Current as the match progressed, the match ended in a draw.

Midfielder Debinha made her 150th career regular season start, becoming the first Brazilian player to reach the milestone in league history. Defender Elizabeth Ball became the third player in franchise history to reach 100 career regular season appearances for the Current, joining I. Rodriguez and midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta. Saturday’s result also extended the Current’s ongoing league-record home unbeaten streak to 26 matches.

"This was a good soccer game where two good teams went after it," said head coach Chris Armas. "We met the demands of a really good game, which meant that we limited much of what they tried to do. We gave up two shots on goal in 90 minutes, and statistically, that's pretty good...I loved the way [the team] stepped on the pitch. We went down a goal but we had a good response to push the game."

Both sides traded goals in the opening half, with the visitors taking an early advantage in the 14th minute through forward Taylor Suarez. Kansas City wasted little time finding an equalizer and leveled the contest 12 minutes later with an impressive one-touch finish by Hopkins. Rodriguez set up the match-tying goal on the left wing, driving towards the endline before curling a cross that found Hopkins at the top of the six-yard box. Hopkins met the cross with the inside of her left boot, perfectly placing her volley into the bottom left corner.

The strike marked Hopkins’ fifth goal of the regular season — and third in the last two matches — and her 10th career regular season goal. Rodriguez earned her third assist of the year and extended her club regular season assist record to 14.

Kansas City generated more chances as the first half progressed. Forward Amelia White capped a stellar individual effort with a left-footed strike from the corner of the penalty area in the 32nd minute, only for Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson to deny the effort with a sprawling fingertip save. In the waning seconds of the first frame, midfielder Croix Bethune and Debinha combined for a give-and-go in the attacking third, but the Current couldn’t quite put the finishing touches on the sequence as the match entered halftime in a 1-1 deadlock.

Anderson stood tall to deny multiple quality looks from the Current in the second half. Midfielder Rocky Rodríguez ripped a shot from distance in the 60th minute that Anderson redirected out of play. In the 76th minute, Bethune sent an effort on frame from inside the box that Anderson pushed away with a full-extension dive. The ensuing loose ball pinballed around the penalty area before Hopkins steered a pass towards LaBonta, who rolled a low strike just wide of goal.

The Current ultimately could not find a second goal, but Kansas City’s back line – which limited Angel City to a season-low eight shots – helped preserve the draw. Kansas City’s unbeaten streak at CPKC Stadium, which began Sept. 7, 2024, has now reached a league-record 26 matches (21-0-5).
