Match Recap: Kansas City Current Falls 2-0 at San Diego Wave FC

SAN DIEGO (Sept. 18, 2026) — The Kansas City Current (11-9-5, 38 pts., 7th place) fell 2-0 against San Diego Wave FC (14-8-3, 45 pts., 2nd place) Friday night at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, Calif. After a scoreless first half, an own goal put the hosts ahead in the 50th minute. Kansas City had chances throughout the contest, but San Diego added a goal in second-half stoppage time to seal the result. 

Neither side could find a breakthrough during the opening half. The Current and Wave combined for 19 total shots with both goalkeepers being called into action on multiple occasions to keep the contest level. The visitors had an early chance in the third minute when midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo fired a left-footed effort from distance, but it was met with a diving save from San Diego goalkeeper Sandra Paños.   

In the 30th minute, goalkeeper Lorena made an incredible full extension dive to keep a half-volleyed effort from San Diego forward Melanie Barcenas out of the back of the net. Five minutes later, Lorena quelled a threatening San Diego move with a kick save to deny a low strike inside the 18-yard box from Wave defender Mimi Van Zanten.   

Kansas City’s best chance of the first half came in the 38th minute, as high pressure from midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta forced a turnover in the attacking third. She pushed the ball ahead for midfielder Debinha, who drove forward into the penalty area and sent a curled effort on frame. However, Paños dove to push the goal-bound shot away and forward Haley Hopkins couldn’t quite steer her follow-up effort on target. The match entered halftime knotted in a scoreless tie. 

The Wave went ahead in the 50th minute after a dangerous cross served in by Barcenas to the back post ultimately trickled into the lower left corner of the goal. Kansas City pushed for an equalizer as the second half progressed, nearly getting on the board in the 79th minute after a well-worked team move. The sequence was capped by forward Michelle Cooper fizzing a ball across the penalty area for Hopkins, whose shot on goal Paños read well. 

Just before second-half stoppage time, Kansas City was reduced to 10 players after a foul was committed just outside the penalty area. The Wave scored on the ensuing free kick, with defender Kennedy Wesley heading home a set piece curled in by San Diego midfielder Kenza Dali. San Diego’s 2-0 advantage held as the final whistle sounded. 

On Saturday, Sept. 26, Kansas City returns to CPKC Stadium — where the club plays three of its next four contests — to close out the regular season series with NWSL expansion side Denver Summit FC at 11:30 a.m. CT. The match will broadcast nationally on CBS.
