Match Recap: Debinha Hat Trick Powers Kansas City Current to 5-1 Victory Against Bay FC Kansas City Current

Match Recap: Debinha Hat Trick Powers Kansas City Current to 5-1 Victory Against Bay FC

KANSAS CITY (Oct. 3, 2026) — The Kansas City Current (13-9-5, 44 pts., 5th place) rode a hat trick for the second consecutive week to a 5-1 win over Bay FC (7-15-5, 26 pts., 14th place) Saturday night at CPKC Stadium. Midfielder Debinha stole the show in the victory, notching a trio of second-half goals to put the Current ahead after Bay FC opened the scoring in the fourth minute.

Forward Haley Hopkins equalized in the 24th minute to cap a chaotic sequence in front of the visitors’ goal, and the 1-1 deadlock stood as the halftime whistle sounded. Debinha put the Current ahead for good in the 46th minute, curling a shot from the top of the 18-yard box off the right post and in, then steered a header off the same post for a goal in the 53rd minute that gave Kansas City a two-goal lead. Debinha completed her hat trick in the 75th minute, rising to meet a cross from forward Amelia White and heading it over the line. Forward Temwa Chawinga capped the scoring in the 89th minute with a breakaway finish to seal the four-goal victory.

Kansas City became the first team in NWSL history with a hat trick in back-to-back weeks and matched the league record for the most hat tricks in a single season with three. Debinha also became the first player in club history to record a hat trick entirely in one half, doing so across a 30-minute span in the second half. It marked the second hat trick of Debinha’s decorated NWSL regular season career, the club’s third in NWSL regular season history and fifth across all competitions.

"We've worked hard for nine months now to be a team that's dangerous when we don't have the ball, you can see that we are. And we're becoming that team that can be dangerous when we do have the ball," said head coach Chris Armas. "We did some really good stuff in possession tonight. We had a lot of chances, a lot of final third entries and final third possession. So, we think it looked much like the KC Current that we want to be, and that we're becoming."

Bay FC opened the scoring in the early stages of the contest with a goal from forward Karlie Lema, but Kansas City wasted little time mounting a comeback. After a flurry of first-half corner kicks, Hopkins ensured the Current’s sixth of the opening frame would count with a goal in the 24th minute. Defender Izzy Rodriguez curled the ball into the six-yard box off the corner as Hopkins, defender Kayla Sharples and Bay FC goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz attempted to meet the cross. The ball diverted towards goal after squeaking through a host of bodies, and Hopkins was in the right position to guide the ball over the goal line from close range.

The goal marked Hopkins’ ninth of the regular season, 14th of her regular season career and eighth goal scored this year at CPKC Stadium. The Current pushed for a go-ahead goal as the first half progressed, but the match remained level at 1-1 as the halftime whistle sounded.

Less than a minute into the second half, the home team took the lead for good. Hopkins led a Current break into the visitors’ half just moments into the second half with Debinha to her left. As Hopkins drove into the attacking third, she split multiple defenders with a pass for Debinha that carried her ahead towards goal. From the top of the 18-yard box, Debinha curled a first-time effort that evaded the outstretched arms of Silkowitz, ricocheted off the inside of the post and landed in the back of the net to give Kansas City a 2-1 lead.

The assist marked Hopkins’ fourth of the season and ninth of her NWSL regular season career. Debinha’s first goal of the contest also moved her into sole possession of fourth place on the NWSL’s all-time regular season scoring leaderboard with 61, passing Alex Morgan.

Eight minutes later, Debinha gave Kansas City a two-goal lead with a brilliant looping header. The move started on the right wing, as forward Michelle Cooper played a ball ahead for an overlapping run made by defender Laney Rouse. Rouse clipped a first-time cross to the back post, and Debinha evaded her mark to meet the cross. Debinha then guided a perfectly placed header across the face of goal that again struck the inside of the right post and bounded over the goal line. Rouse was credited with the second assist of her NWSL regular season career.

Debinha completed her hat trick in the 75th minute as the Current’s clinical offensive performance continued. Her third goal was nearly a carbon copy of her second tally, with a headed finish courtesy of a cross served in from the right wing. This time, it was White who sent in a cross to the top of the six-yard box, and Debinha rose above the Bay FC defense to hammer a downwards headed effort under Silkowitz’s legs and into the center of the net.

The hat trick marked the second of Debinha’s regular season career, her first coming with North Carolina in September 2022. It also marked the fifth hat trick in club history and the fourth across all NWSL competitions. Kansas City also became the first team in league laurels with hat tricks in consecutive regular season matches, with Hopkins accomplishing the feat last week against Denver. White earned her first professional assist as the Current took a 4-1 lead.

Debinha now has 63 career NWSL regular season goals, firmly cementing fourth place on the NWSL’s regular season scoring leaderboard. She now sits just three goals behind Christine Sinclair (66) for third. The league’s all-time leading scorer across all competitions, Debinha extended her career NWSL goal tally to 87 with her Saturday night hat trick.

Chawinga added the Current’s fifth and final goal in the 89th minute with a patented breakaway finish on a Kansas City counterattack. Midfielder Rocky Rodríguez sprung Chawinga ahead with a long ball from inside the Current’s own penalty area, playing Chawinga in behind the Bay FC defense. Chawinga met the ball near midfield and broke away from there, capping the forward run by calmly rounding Silkowitz and rolling a composed finish into a vacated net.

On a night where Chawinga became the eighth player in franchise history to reach 5,000 regular season minutes played for the club, she earned her 12th goal of the regular season and 47th of her regular season career. Chawinga’s goal sealed a 5-1 victory for the Current, which vaulted them into fifth place in NWSL standings.

Chawinga has now scored in each of her first five matches against Bay FC, equaling a record set by Alex Morgan as the only players in NWSL history to score a goal in each of their first five matches against a single opponent. Morgan did so against the Washington Spirit from 2013-15.

The Current has now recorded three hat tricks in NWSL regular season play — and four across all competitions — after entering the season without a hat trick in the regular season. With three hat tricks, Kansas City has matched the 2019 North Carolina Courage’s record of most hat tricks in a single season. Debinha and Hopkins (9/26/26) join Chawinga (5/10/26) to round out the Current’s trio of regular season hat tricks.

Also on Saturday night, I. Rodriguez made her 31st consecutive regular season start to set a new franchise record. The Current also extended their league-record home unbeaten streak at CPKC Stadium to 31 matches, amassing a 24-0-7 record over that span.
