Match Preview: Kansas City Current Squares Off With Gotham FC on Friday Night

KANSAS CITY (Aug. 13, 2026) – The Kansas City Current (9-7-3, 7th place, 30 pts.) will face top-of-the-table Gotham FC (12-3-4, 1st place, 40 pts.) for a Friday night showdown on Aug. 14. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET) at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J. This will be the third time the two sides square off this year. 

The match will broadcast nationally on Prime Video with Mike Watts and Lori Lindsey on the call as well as on the World Feed with Lisa Carlin and Gary Bailey. Dave Borchardt and Sarah Gonzalez will be over the air on 90.9 The Bridge, and the game will also be available on the KC Current App in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

TEN THINGS TO KNOW

1. Kansas City remains unblemished in the all-time regular season series with Gotham FC at 6-0-5. The Current has out-scored Gotham 16-8 in the regular season. 

2. Friday will be the 12th time Kansas City and Gotham have faced off in the regular season. The only team to go winless in their first 12 regular season games against a single opponent is Gotham itself, doing so against Chicago from 2013-18. 

3. The last regular season meeting between the two sides was a 2-1 KC Current win on April 4 at CPKC Stadium. Forward Debinha found the equalizer in the 37th minute before forward Michelle Cooper scored the game-winner in the 60th minute.

4. Last week, Debinha broke the NWSL all-time scoring record across all competitions with her 83rd career goal. It was also her 59th career regular season goal, which is tied for fifth all-time. 

5. Ten of the 83 goals Debinha has scored have been against Gotham FC. Only Megan Rapinoe (13) and Alex Morgan (11) have scored more against Gotham in league history.

6. Midfielder Croix Bethune recorded her 20th career regular season assist on Aug. 8, becoming the second youngest, second fastest and 20th player to reach that mark in NWSL history. Her eight assists are tied for first in the league this year.

7. Midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta is 35 minutes away from reaching 15,000 career regular season minutes. She will become the 20th NWSL player to reach that milestone. 

8. On Friday, defender Izzy Rodriguez is set to play in her 46th straight regular season game, equaling the longest streak in club history. Additionally, defender Gabrielle Robinson could make her 50th career regular season start. 

9. Forward Temwa Chawinga continues to make history with Malawi at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Ranked No. 153 in the world entering the tournament, the Scorchers finished atop Group C and won their quarterfinal match to secure their spot in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Malawi will play in the WAFCON final on Aug. 16. Chawinga, whose merch can be purchased HERE, has five goals and two assists.
