Match Preview: Friday Night Match at San Diego Wave FC Up Next for Kansas City Current

KANSAS CITY (Sept. 17, 2026) – The Kansas City Current (11-8-5, 7th place, 38 pts.) is back on the West Coast this weekend for a Friday night matchup at San Diego Wave FC (13-8-3, 4th, 42 pts.) on Sept. 18. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. CT (7 p.m. PT) at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, Calif.

The match will broadcast nationally on Prime with Mike Watts, Lori Lindsey and Ali Riley on the call as well as on the World Feed with Jamie Hersch and Gary Bailey. Dave Borchardt and Sarah Gonzalez will be over the air on 90.9 The Bridge, and the game will also be available on the KC Current App in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

TEN THINGS TO KNOW
1. Friday will be the 10th edition of the “Water War” between the Current and the Wave. Kansas City, which is undefeated in the last six meetings with San Diego, leads the all-time regular season series at 6-1-2.

2. Kansas City has won all four regular season road matches played in San Diego. The longest regular season road winning streak in NWSL history is five games, achieved five times.

3. The last meeting between the two sides was a 2-2 draw at CPKC Stadium on July 17. Midfielder Croix Bethune had a goal and an assist, defender Laney Rouse recorded her first career assist and forward Temwa Chawinga notched a goal.

4. Kansas City’s last trip to Snapdragon Stadium resulted in a 2-0 shutout win for the Current on April 12, 2025, with defender Izzy Rodriguez assisting forward/midfielder Debinha’s goal and midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta converting a PK.

5. Forward Temwa Chawinga scored her 10th goal of the regular season on Sept. 11, the seventh player in the league to hit the 10-goal milestone this year. She has scored at least 10 goals in each of her three NWSL seasons.

6. Last week, midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo cracked into the top 10 of the NWSL’s all-time regular season minutes played leaderboard. She has logged 16,401 career regular season minutes over 12 seasons between Kansas City and Chicago.

7. Forward Michelle Cooper was recently featured in a Sports Illustrated article highlighting her rising stock with the U.S. Women’s National Team. She has recorded three goals and an assist in her last six regular season games with the Current.

8. Chawinga and goalkeeper Lorena are two of four NWSL players named to the 30-player shortlist for the prestigious 2026 Ballon d’Or. Lorena is also one of five global finalists for the 2026 Yashin Trophy.

9. Defender Katie Scott was with the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team at the 2026 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland. She was one of eight NWSL players on the roster. She started and logged 45 minutes in the opening group stage match vs. Italy on Sept. 6, also subbing in vs. Brazil in the Round of 16.
