Malawi Calls Up Kansas City Current Forward Temwa Chawinga for FIFA Window

KANSAS CITY (Sept. 29, 2026) — Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga has been called up by the Malawi Women’s National Team, nicknamed the Scorchers, for the October FIFA international window. 

Malawi will play Zimbabwe twice as part of the 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers. The teams will first meet on Friday, Oct. 9, in Malawi before squaring off again in Zimbabwe on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The winner of the series will progress to the next round where they will face either Kenya or Seychelles in February 2027.

Chawinga is coming off a remarkable run at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) this summer in Morocco, which was her first appearance with her national team since February 2025. The Scorchers entered the event ranked No. 153 in the world before winning Group C and reaching the finals in their WAFCON debut. Malawi also punched its ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time. 

A co-captain of her WAFCON squad, Chawinga won the tournament’s Golden Boot for amassing five goals and two assists, highlighted by a goal and an assist in the quarterfinals as Malawi secured its spot in the World Cup. She was also selected to the WAFCON Best XI.

The star forward debuted for her home country at the age of 18 and scored her first international goal against Zambia in 2016. Chawinga captained Malawi at the 2023 COSAFA Cup where she won both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball for scoring nine goals.
