Logarzo, Matildas Advance to the Quarterfinals at Tokyo 2020

KASHIMA, Japan (July 27, 2021) – Kansas City NWSL’s Chloe Logarzo and the Matildas took on the United States Tuesday morning in the battle for second place in Group G. Although both teams had dangerous attacks and chances, neither could find the back of the net, sending the United States on to the quarterfinals on Friday. Later in the morning, Australia found out they will also be advancing to the quarterfinals as a result of the other matches.

Logarzo featured in the Starting XI for the first time in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and showed off her speed in the early minutes when she recovered back to put pressure on Alex Morgan’s breakaway, causing her to rush a shot. She tallied 61 minutes for Australia before being subbed off. Logarzo looked sharp on the ball with her speed of play and her willingness to recover when defense went unmatched.

The United States had an early chance in the eighth minute of play when the ball was cleared off their back line to Morgan on a breakaway. Morgan had open grass to take her space but fell as she was shooting for an easy save for the Australian goalkeeper, Teagan Micah. Australia responded in the 18th minute off an Ellie Carpenter long throw that bounced around to end up on Mary Fowler’s head who redirected the ball, but it hit the top crossbar and into United States goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher’s, hands.

The United States and Morgan nearly had the first goal of the match in the 30th minute off a Christen Press corner that found Morgan’s head and went in but was deemed offsides. The rest of the first half seemed to belong to Australia, as they were dominating possession and creating dangerous chances in the attack. Despite both teams' chances, neither team could find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of action.

The story was the same in the second half with both teams spending time passing in the midfield and struggling to convert. After a full ninety plus extra time, the score remained a 0-0 draw.

Up next, Australia faces off with Great Britain on Friday, July 30th at 4 a.m. CT on Universo. The United States will take the field opposite of the high-scoring Netherlands team later in the morning at 6 a.m. CT on NBCSN and Telemundo.
