KC Current II Concludes Successful Showing at The Soccer Tournament

Kansas City Current II concluded a successful showing at The Soccer Tournament (TST), advancing to the quarterfinals after taking the top spot in Group A. Hosted at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., TST is the world’s premier 7v7 soccer festival, bringing together top players, celebrities and clubs from around the globe to compete for three $1 million, winner-take-all prizes.

“I’m really proud of the group and the way we competed throughout the tournament,” said KC Current II head coach Vasil Ristov. “We showed resilience, quality, and belief in every match, and I think that was reflected in our ability to finish top of our group and push into the quarterfinals. There’s a lot to build on from this experience, and I’m excited about where this group is headed.”

Using a 7v7 format, TST teams competed in World Cup style tournaments consisting of group play and single-elimination knockout rounds. The women’s tournament featured four groups of four teams battling it out in the group stage before the eight-team knockout round. All games ended on a game-winning goal through TST’s Target Score Time, calculated from the leading team’s score plus one, played during an untimed final period after two 18-minute halves.

More information about TST, including final schedule and standings, can be found HERE

MATCH 1 VS. SPORTIVE FC

KC Current II opened its 2026 TST campaign with a 2-0 victory over Sportive FC in the Group A opener. Midfielder Brooklyn Robbins put Current II in front during regulation, capitalizing on a high press that forced a deflected goalkeeper clearance into the back of the net. The goal gave Kansas City a 1-0 advantage heading into Target Score Time, where the first team to reach two goals claimed victory. After the format shifted to 5v5 with one player from each side leaving the field three minutes into Target Score Time, defender Kayla Colbert delivered the game-winning strike on an assist from forward Elle Kershner to secure the target score and seal the 2-0 win. The result gave KC Current II a strong start to group stage play in Cary.

MATCH 2 VS. US WOMEN

KC Current II suffered its first loss of 2026 TST, falling 1-0 to the two-time defending champion US Women in its second group stage match. Current II held the 2024 and 2025 TST champions scoreless throughout regulation, with neither side able to find a breakthrough despite several quality chances. A disciplined defensive effort by KC Current II kept the match at 0-0 through the final whistle, sending the contest into Target Score Time. As play transitioned to 4v4, the US Women ultimately found the game-winning goal to reach the target score of one and secure the victory. Despite the result, Current II showcased its ability to compete with one of the tournament's most accomplished teams.

MATCH 3 VS. CLUB AMÉRICA WOMEN

KC Current II delivered a statement performance in its final group stage match, defeating Club América Women 6-1 to finish at the top of Group A and advance to the quarterfinals. Kansas City set the tone early, with forward Skylar Blaise opening the scoring to give KCCII a 1-0 lead. The team then doubled the advantage later in the first half with a Club América Women own goal putting Current II up 2-0 headed into the second half of regulation.

Club América Women responded in the second half through an Isabelle Luebbert goal, but KC Current II quickly regained dominance as forward Jacy Hackler restored the two-goal cushion, followed by midfielder Khari Hontz extending the lead to 4-1. Defender Kayla Colbert then finished a chance created by Blaise to make it 5-1 at the end of regulation. In Target Score Time, forward Avery Clark capped off the performance with an unassisted finish to clinch the 6-1 result.

QUARTERFINAL VS. IOWA DEMON HAWKS

KC Current II's 2026 TST run came to an end in the quarterfinals with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to the Iowa Demon Hawks. After a tightly contested match, the Demon Hawks broke through late in regulation when Andrea Paola found the back of the net to give Iowa a 1-0 advantage heading into Target Score Time.

KC Current II defender Itala Gemelli responded, unleashing a strike from outside the box that found the back of the net to level the match at 1-1. The equalizer came just seconds before Target Score Time transitioned to 3v3 play.

With the match deadlocked and both teams needing one more goal to advance, the Demon Hawks capitalized in the last minute of 3v3 Target Score Time, scoring the decisive winner to secure a 2-1 victory. Despite the result, KC Current II concluded an impressive 2026 TST run, finishing atop Group A and advancing to the quarterfinals after a strong showing in group play.

“TST was a great experience and competitive environment, building team collaboration and comradery,” said KC Current II captain Itala Gemelli. “I’m so proud of how we came together and the effort all players, coaches and staff put in.”

KC Current II returns to WPSL play on Thursday, June 4, against Union KC at 7 p.m. CT at Paragon Star Sports Complex in Lee’s Summit, Mo., before the club is back home at Riverside Stadium to host Side FC 92 on Saturday, June 6, at 5 p.m. CT. More information about Current II home matches can be found HERE. Current II sits at the top of WPSL Heartland Division standings with an unblemished 3-0-0 record and a plus-12 goal differential.
