Kansas City NWSL Opens Regular Season With Scoreless Draw Against Racing Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 15, 2021) - For the first time since the league’s inaugural season in 2013, two new franchises opened the NWSL season as Racing Louisville played host to Kansas City at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky. Both squads were in search of their first wins as it was a physical, hard-fought battle all night, but neither team could find the back of the net, ending with a 0-0 draw. As a result, Kansas City and Racing Louisville each earned a point in the standings.

The first half started off about equal for both sides as possession slightly favored Louisville at 51.9 percent. Both teams had their fair share of chances, but neither could convert in the final third. Kansas City had a great chance in the second minute of play as Amy Rodriguez fired a shot in the box off a through pass from Victoria Pickett. Darian Jenkins of Kansas City also placed a great free kick on Louisville’s Michelle Bentos in her regular season debut. Racing Louisville had some dangerous chances near the end of the first half, but Nicole Barnhart of Kansas City came up huge with two saves and stayed aggressive on the ball in the final third.

To start the second half, Kansas City got off to a great start and controlled possession. At the 52nd minute, Kansas City owned 80 percent of possession over Racing Louisville. Racing Louisville put on the pressure the whole half against Kansas City’s backline but was unable to solve goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart.

Coach Huw Williams stated that, “Victoria Pickett continues to play at a high level in the midfield and makes dangerous runs into the attack. The final part is to get her to get more shots off.”

Coach Williams further explained that he was “excited” with the shutout as the team’s goal going into the match was to keep a clean sheet. He hopes to build on this shutout next week and “to also sneak a few goals in the next game at Houston.”

Kansas City now turns its focus to the next regular season match on May 23rd in Houston against the Houston Dash. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. CT and the game will be streamed live on Paramount+.
