Kansas City Current to Represent NWSL on Global Stage at World Sevens Football

KANSAS CITY (Oct. 28, 2025) — The Kansas City Current announced Tuesday the club will represent the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the first-ever North American edition of the World Sevens Football (W7F) Tournament. The groundbreaking 7v7 tournament will take place Dec. 5-7, 2025, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and will feature top women’s clubs from across the Americas. The event aims to elevate the women’s game by bringing together elite clubs and creating new playing opportunities.

The Current and San Diego Wave FC will represent the NWSL, alongside Canada’s AFC Toronto, Mexico’s Club América and Tigres Femenil, Brazil’s Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, and Colombia’s Deportivo Cali Femenino. Together, these powerhouse clubs will compete in a fast-paced, global showcase celebrating the elite skill and excitement of women’s football. Kansas City’s roster for the tournament will be announced at a later date.

“Our team thrives on intensity, creativity, and competition which fit perfectly with the 7v7 style of play,” said Milan Ivanovic, Assistant Coach of the Kansas City Current. “This tournament is an incredible opportunity for our players to test themselves against some of the world’s best in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. We’re proud to represent Kansas City and the NWSL on the international stage and to continue pushing the women’s game forward. The growth of women’s football is accelerating globally, and events like World Sevens Football help showcase the skill and excitement that define our sport. We can’t wait to bring the KC Current energy to Fort Lauderdale.”

The North American W7F Tournament will feature fast paced 7v7 matches, a $5 million prize pool – one of the largest in women’s football – and a broadcast partnership with DAZN. The event will be divided over four sessions with the semifinal, third-place and championship matches taking place Dec. 7. The schedule can be found HERE.

As one of the fastest-growing franchises in women’s sports, the Kansas City Current continues to raise the bar for excellence both on and off the field. Under the visionary leadership of Angie and Chris Long, the club has transformed the landscape of women’s athletics by opening CPKC Stadium, the world’s first purpose-built stadium for a women’s professional team and capturing the 2025 NWSL Shield to secure the league’s top seed heading into the postseason.

The Current features some of the most dynamic talent in the world, including Malawian star Temwa Chawinga — the 2024 NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner — and Brazilian internationals Debinha, Lorena and Bia Zaneratto. Rising American standouts Michelle Cooper, Claire Hutton, Ally Sentnor and Lo’eau LaBonta add strength, depth and star power to a squad already recognized among the best in global football.
