Kansas City Current Signs WAFCON Champion Defender Maëva Nyadjou

KANSAS CITY (Sept. 3, 2026) – The Kansas City Current has signed Cameroon Women’s National Team star and recent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) champion Myriam Maëva Nyadjou Wamen, the club announced on Thursday. The defender, who goes by Maëva Nyadjou, inked a contract through the 2029 season. 

She is expected to arrive in Kansas City in the coming weeks, pending receipt of her P-1 visa. 

“We are pleased to welcome Maëva to Kansas City and have her join what we’re building,” said general manager Ryan Dell. “She is coming off a remarkable WAFCON tournament where she was a key part of Cameroon’s historic success. Maëva is a young talent who is only getting started, and we’re excited to help her develop.”

Cameroon, which earned a bid to the 2027 FIFA World Cup, won its first-ever WAFCON title in August to become just the fourth different champion in the event’s history. Nyadjou was named the 2026 WAFCON Best Young Player and was selected to the 2026 WAFCON Best XI. 

The Indomitable Lionesses finished atop Group D standings with a 2-0-1 record in group play. Nyadjou anchored a backline which conceded only two goals during the entire tournament and kept a clean sheet in all three knockout matches. She started all six matches at center back.

The 19-year-old Nyadjou’s first international goal proved to be the game-winner in a 1-0 victory vs. 10-time champion Nigeria in the WAFCON quarterfinals. She then converted her spot kick in a penalty shootout win over host Morocco in the semifinals before dishing out an assist in a 3-0 win against Malawi in the final. 

“I am very happy to begin a new adventure with the Kansas City Current,” said Nyadjou. “Playing in the NWSL has always been a dream of mine, and I look forward to training with and competing against some of the best players in the world.”

Prior to earning her first senior team call-up in April 2025, Nyadjou represented Cameroon at the under-20 level. She captained her squad at the 2026 African U-20 Women’s World Cup qualification campaign where she scored five goals in six games.

Nyadjou most recently played for Amazone FAP in the Guinness Super League, Cameroon’s top-flight women’s championship, based in the capital city and her hometown of Yaoundé.
