Kansas City Current Sign Defender Alex Loera Through 2024 Season

KANSAS CITY (Jan. 14, 2022) — The Kansas City Current announced today that defender Alex Loera has signed with the club through the 2024 season. Loera was Kansas City’s fourth round pick in the 2021 NWSL Draft and opted to return to Santa Clara University to finish her collegiate career.

“We are pleased to welcome Alex to our KC Current family,” said Director of Soccer Operations Huw Williams. “She enjoyed a stellar college career, winning both team and individual awards and was one of the top three players in collegiate soccer over the past two years. We are looking forward to seeing her build on that success at the professional level.”

In May of 2021 Loera led the Broncos to the school’s second NCAA Championship and earned the Honda Sport Award for soccer, given to the best collegiate female athlete in each season. She was named the NCAA Women’s Tournament Defensive MVP, as well as being named First Team All-Region and Second Team All-American.

Loera started 97 matches for Santa Clara with seven goals and 15 assists, despite playing primarily on the back line. Her defense contributed to a 0.86 goals per game average in her senior season, in addition to nine clean sheets. She is the first player in West Coast Conference history to be named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons.

“I am so blessed, humbled, and excited to be starting my professional career with such an authentic and rapidly growing club,” said Loera. “With all the great things in motion, KC is the perfect place for me, and I can’t wait to contribute and be part of this city that celebrates soccer!”

Earlier this week, Loera was named this week to the U.S. Women’s Under-23 National Team for the first time. The Thornton, Colo. native is one of 18 players training with the national team from Jan. 23-28.
