Kansas City Current re-sign midfielder Desiree Scott through 2024

The Kansas City Current have announced the re-signing of veteran midfielder Desiree Scott to a one-year contract through the 2024 season. This week marked the beginning of the 2024 Current preseason, presented by CPKC, with 30 players on the roster.

“Desi is a true leader on and off the field, and we are very happy to have her back for another year,” said general manager Camille Ashton. “Last year was tough on her, but she’s worked hard, and we are excited to see her comeback.”

Scott was an original member of the NWSL, making her debut with FC Kansas City in 2013. She returned to Kansas City in 2021 as part of the NWSL’s return to the city. One of the Current’s captains in 2022, she was named the inaugural winner of the Ally Award, presented by Ally Bank and the NWSL Players Association. This award recognizes the athlete that embodies the idea of “teammate,” supporting and motivating rookies and veterans alike and was voted on by her peers. She has 124 appearances in the league with over 10,000 minutes played.

Internationally, Scott has been a mainstay with Canada’s national teams, making her first appearances with the youth national teams at the age of 16 and her senior team debut in 2010. With nearly 200 caps for her country, Scott is a veteran of three FIFA World Cups (2011, 2015, 2019), Olympic Bronze medal winner in 2012 and 2016 and a Gold Medal winner at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“I am so excited to be able to be back in the place I call my home away from home. They say all good things take time and I just needed a little extra but to say I’m motivated is an understatement. To be able to be back with this team, our fans, make an impact helping us get back to championship ways; it’s incredible!” said Scott. “It truly has come full circle for me being back with Vlatko as he was my first pro coach when the league began in 2013! To now be in the 2024 season, in a brand-new stadium, knowing the type of leadership and style he brings combined with the players we have here at the club, what’s not to get excited about! This is going to be a big year and I’m grateful to be a part of it!“

The rest of the Current’s preseason roster is a mixture of veteran leadership, promising youth and international stardom. The club preseason roster features 13 players who have played for their country at the highest level, representing the USA (AD Franch, Hailie Mace), Argentina (Sophie Braun), Brazil (Bia Zaneratto, Debinha, Lauren), Canada (Scott, Nichelle Prince), Denmark (Stine Ballisager), France (Claire Lavogez), Malawi (Temwa Chawinga) and Sweden (Hanna Glas, Mimmi Larsson).

In addition, the team boasts two players who are mainstays in the U.S. Youth National Teams. Forward Alex Pfeiffer and midfielder Claire Hutton have been called up in 2024 to the U.S. U17 and U20 rosters respectively.
