Kansas City Current places three players on NWSL Best XI teams

The National Women’s Soccer League today announced the 2022 Best XI First Team and Second Team awards, presented by Mastercard. The list includes three Kansas City Current players, with midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta earned First Team while goalkeeper AD Franch and defender Hailie Mace earned Second Team honors.

“We are so excited for these players to be recognized for their standout play and leadership on the pitch this season,” said general manager Camille Levin Ashton. “While there is still more to do, their contributions to our team have been invaluable all season long.”

The Best XI First Team and Best XI Second Team are based on weighted voting scale comprised of players (50%), owners/GMs/coaches (20%), media (20%) and fans (10%). Each athlete will receive a cash bonus for their achievements this season as part of Mastercard’s celebration of the Best XI and Best XI Second Team.

Midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta (Best XI First Team) – Often recognized for her goal celebrations, LaBonta has been one of the driving forces behind the Current’s success this season. Coming into the 2022 campaign, LaBonta had five goals and four assists across all competitions. This season, the veteran midfielder set team records and led the team with seven goals and four assists.

Goalkeeper AD Franch (Best XI Second Team) – Franch was the backbone of the Current’s defense. She finished third in the league with 66 saves, including a game-saving penalty stop against the Washington Spirit on July 10. Franch also set club records for saves and clean sheets.

Defender Hailie Mace (Best XI Second Team) – Mace also enjoyed a career season. Playing outside, Mace has been one of the team’s strongest defenders and one of the team’s most dangerous attackers. She set career highs in games played (18), started (17), minutes played (1,508), goals (4) and assists (2).
