After scoring seven goals in six regular season matches last month to jump up to second on the Golden Boot leaderboard, Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga has been selected as the NWSL May Player of the Month, the league announced on Thursday.
Chawinga has now won the monthly award six times in her career since joining the league in 2024. No other player in NWSL history has been named Player of the Month more than four times.
The two-time defending NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner made history on May 10 vs. Chicago by recording the first regular season hat trick in club history. Her goals came in 50 minutes for the eighth fastest hat trick in NWSL history and the first in league play this season.
She followed up her hat trick with a brace five days later against Houston, and her five goals are tied for the most in league history in a two-game stretch. The Malawi native also scored against Portland on May 24 and Boston on May 30, both which were the game-winning goals. Her 15 career regular season game-winners are tied for the fourth-most for a single club.
Chawinga has amassed 42 goals and 11 assists in her regular season career, finding the back of the net at least once in 36 of her 56 league matches. She became the fastest player in NWSL history to reach 50 goal contributions, doing so in just 53 regular season games.
The NWSL Player of the Month is selected by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league consistently, and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent. Awards for the month of May are based on performances during regular season matches.
