Kansas City Current Face the Houston Dash Friday, April 15 at Children’s Mercy Park

The Kansas City Current plays the second of three 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup home matches this Friday, April 15 at 7 p.m. CT. This will be the second meeting of the tournament between the Current and the Houston Dash.  Kansas City won the previous matchup 3-0 on March 30.  

The Current suffered its first loss of the tournament on April 2 against Racing Louisville. Despite the final score of 0-3, the Current remain in first place, tied with the Chicago Red Stars in the Central Division.  

Houston is in fourth place in the Central Division with a record of 1-3-0 and two straight losses. The team is captained by English national team forward Rachel Daly, who started all four games for the Dash and leads the team with 14 shots.

LAST MEETING 
The Kansas City Current set the tone quickly against the Dash on March 30. Taylor Leach scored the fastest goal in Challenge Cup history 1:32 into the match. Kristen Hamilton tallied another goal in the first half and Lo’eau LaBonta closed the scoring with a breakaway goal in the 60th minute. Rookie forward Elyse Bennett tallied two assists in her first career start in the match.  

PLAYERS TO WATCH 

Kansas City Current: Midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta – LaBonta is a high-energy midfielder and leader for the Current. Defensively, she is key to disrupting the opposing team’s attack, immediately looking to create opportunities for her side. LaBonta is best known for setting up plays and creating scoring opportunities, however her last two goals scored have been against the Dash.  

Houston Dash: Midfielder Marisa Viggiano – Coming to the Dash in January as part of a trade with the Orlando Pride, Viggiano has found a consistent role in Houston. She started all four games and earned her first goal of the season against Racing Louisville on March 25.
