KANSAS CITY (Oct. 23, 2026) — The Kansas City Current officially opened a mini-pitch at Foreign Language Academy on Thursday, Oct. 22, marking the club’s sixth mini-pitch in the Kansas City metro. The Current hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new mini-pitch alongside CVS Health and United Way of Greater Kansas City, the club’s Official Community Charity Partner. Funding for the new mini-pitch was provided courtesy of a grant from CVS Health to the U.S. Soccer Foundation.
Kansas City Current players Avery Clark, Mary Long, Rocky Rodríguez and Katie Scott were in attendance at Thursday’s event, and they were joined by representatives from CVS Health, Foreign Language Academy and Kansas City Public Schools.
“It’s always exciting to bring a mini-pitch to a community, but especially to a school like Foreign Language Academy where soccer is already so popular among students,” said Kansas City Current Vice President, Community Relations, Ben Aken. “This pitch will be a place for kids to play, build friendships and stay active for years to come, while helping us expand access to the sport across Kansas City.”
The Current also has mini-pitch locations at Ashland Square Park, which opened in 2022, at Central Park and Banneker Elementary School, both of which opened in fall 2023 and at Kansas City Girls Preparatory Academy, which opened in August 2025. The club’s newly opened mini-pitch at Foreign Language Academy will serve students during the day and remain open after school hours, allowing for the community to utilize the space.
The Kansas City Public Schools Education Foundation partnered with the Kansas City Current and CVS Health to bring this mini-pitch project to Foreign Language Academy as part of the Foundation's broader commitment to expanding access to recreational and educational opportunities for Kansas City Public Schools students.
“Great schools are strengthened by great community partnerships. This mini-pitch gives our students a new place to play, connect and grow while creating something the surrounding community can enjoy as well, said Kansas City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Collier. “We’re incredibly grateful to the Kansas City Current and all of the partners who made this investment in our students possible.”
Located just south of downtown Kansas City, Foreign Language Academy is the only school in the area offering Spanish and Mandarin Chinese immersion programs, standing out by blending rigorous academics with cultural enrichment. They offer a wide variety of academic, athletic and extracurricular activities, with a diverse teaching staff that helps students rise beyond traditional expectations.
“There’s something special about giving students a brand-new space and then watching them make it theirs,” said Foreign Language Academy Principal Michelle Aguirre-Hill. “This mini-pitch will be a place for our students to compete, play, build friendships and simply have fun. I know our FLA students are going to put it to good use.”
CVS Health, an official health and wellness partner of the Kansas City Current, provided a grant to the U.S. Soccer Foundation to help bring the mini-pitch at Foreign Language Academy to life, creating more opportunities for young people to be active, develop new skills and connect with their community. CVS Health was also a key partner in the Current’s no-cost, no-barrier soccer league at the 9th & Van Brunt Athletic Fields, which wrapped up its inaugural season in August.
“At CVS Health, we believe that every child should have access to spaces that support their health, well-being and future success,” said Tony Sindel, Region Director, Missouri and Kansas, CVS Health. “This mini-pitch is more than a place to play soccer. It is a space where students can stay active, build meaningful connections and develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime. We are proud to partner with the Kansas City Current, the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Foreign Language Academy to help create new opportunities for young people in this community.”
CVS Health provided a grant to the U.S. Soccer Foundation to fund the mini-pitch at Foreign Language Academy. The mini-pitch furthers the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Safe Places to Play initiative, which aims to create 1,000 mini-pitches across the country by the end of 2026.
