Desiree Scott Makes Third Olympic Appearance

SAPPORO, JAPAN (July 21, 2021) – Desiree Scott and Canada Women’s National Team opened Group E in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics against the host Japan Wednesday at 5:30 a.m. CT. The match marks Scott’s third Olympic appearance for the Canadian squad, and she was handed the captain armband from Christine Sinclair to finish the last 10 minutes of the game, as she played the full 90 for Canada. 

Scott featured in the starting lineup for Canada and had an outstanding impact in the midfield with her aggressive play and connection of passes. The two teams ended in a 1-1 tie with a goal from Canada’s Captain Sinclair in the 6th minute and Japan’s Mana Iwabuchi at the 84th minute mark.

Scott was a contributor in the sixth-minute goal for Canada in her midfield play as she connected passes which led to Nichelle Prince to streak down the right touchline and slot a perfect ball for Sinclair. Japan had a chance to equalize in the 53rd minute when Canada goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé came off her line with an aggressive attack on a breakaway and gave Japan a penalty kick after VAR review. Labbé was not fazed and saved the penalty kick, holding the lead for her team. 

Even though Japan did not find the back of the net on the penalty kick, the home country found the equalizer in the 84th minute when Japan cleared the ball off a corner kick and Mana Iwabuchi sprinted past Canada’s backline to slot the ball in the back of the net for Japan. This ended up being the final goal of the game as the two sides finished in a 1-1 draw. 

Scott and Canadian Soccer will next face Chile on Saturday, July 24th at 2:30 a.m. CT on Telemundo.
