Bowen Makes Third-Straight Start for New Zealand

MIYAGIJapan (July 272021) Kansas City NWSL’s Katie Bowen made her third-straight start for New Zealand as they took on top-of-the-table Sweden in the final group phase match on Tuesday morning. Sweden went undefeated in the group phase, tallying a 2-0 victory over New Zealand.

Sweden proved why they are leading Group G when they struck in the 17th minute off a corner kick that was headed in by Anna Anvegard for the first score. Just about 10 minutes later, Sweden added to their lead off a second header goal from Madelen Janogy.

The second half was equal on both ends as the two countries saw a fair share of chances for their respective teams. New Zealand had a dangerous chance in the 66th minute as Ali Riley sent a cross into the Swedish box, but no one was there to tap in for the Ferns.

This concludes New Zealand and Katie Bowen’s Olympic run as only the top two from the group phases move on to the quarterfinals. Bowen tallied three starts and 360 minutes for her home country.
