Match Report Presented by Nebraska Furniture Mart: Kansas City Current fall to Racing Louisville FC

The Kansas City Current suffered its first loss of the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup with a 3-0 defeat from Racing Louisville FC. This was the Current’s third game in eight days after two wins on the road, and their first home game of the season.

“Obviously not the result we wanted, but what a crowd,” said head coach Matt Potter on the team’s first home match, played in front of 6,310 fans. “The enthusiasm, the energy in the stadium—you could feel it. Even when we found ourselves goals down, they stayed encouraging the team and that kind of spurred us on. I felt even though the result didn’t go our way we kept taking the game to our opponent all the way to the end.”

Racing Louisville FC scored first in the ninth minute when a cross from forward Jessica McDonald found a scramble in the box, deflecting off Current defender Hailie Mace.

In the 60th minute, Louisville midfielder Lauren Milliet found herself at the middle of the box on a through ball from Kansas native Cece Kizer. The ball took a slight deflection off Current defender Alex Loera before Milliet was able to get a foot on it and slide one past AD Franch.

Just five minutes later, Louisville earned a corner kick in the 65th minute. Forward Emina Ekic curled the ball into the box to find the head of Gemma Bonner, who narrowly beat Franch to log Louisville’s third score.

Despite the score, the Current consistently pressed the attack against Louisville, outshooting the visitors 17-9 and controlling half of possession.

“We’re just looking forward to righting the wrongs from today, working on what little improvements we can make and being back out there and putting it right for our fans,” said team captain Desiree Scott.

The Kansas City Current play next at home on Friday, April 15 at 7:00 p.m. against the Houston Dash. Season Tickets and Flex plans are available for all home matches at Children’s Mercy Park. For pricing and information visit kansascitycurrent.com
