Selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft, Spaanstra comes to the Current from the University of Virginia. During her collegiate career, Spaanstra earned All ACC Third team in 2018, Second team in 2019 and 2022, and First team honors in 2021. She was also named to the ACC Championship All-Tournament team three times.
